Principal
Cote Associates is an Intellectual Property Strategy and Commercialization firm providing services to a variety of client organizations. Primarily acting as a broker to assist clients in the acquisition, sale or licensing of their Intellectual Property includes patents, technology, know-how and related materials including prototypes and manufacturing processes. In addition to these brokerages services CA also develops and executes negotiation strategies and valuation assistance. This effort sometimes includes assisting clients in the determination of which inventions to maintain as trade secret and which to apply for patent coverage, including foreign equivalents. Occasionally CA is asked to perform initial investigations into the availability or readiness of third party IP owners to license or sell their IP to CA client organizations. CA works on an hourly, retainer or shared interest form of contractual agreements. References are available.
Rockwell Scientific Licensing2003-2006
President
Responsible for all IP Commercialization efforts for Rockwell Scientific, previously the central R&D facility for Rockwell International, now Teledyne Scientific and Imaging, LLC. For the last two fiscal years was able to deliver first profitable years for Licensing activities ($500K and $1600K net), and reduced costs by 22% and 52% while significantly improving productivity. Duties included all out of market licensing for parents, Rockwell Automation and Rockwell Collins as well as Rockwell Scientific. Also actively marketed some Boeing IP that originated at the Rockwell Science Center. Responsibile for Spin Out opportunities and the IP Legal Department as well. IP duties include efforts to increase disclosures of patentable inventions, preparation of patent applications, and Foreign patent portfolio development. Activities have also included donations of IP to a local university, analysis of assertion opportunities, preparation of competitive IP portfolio analysis and spin out of RSC technologies through Venture Capital investment.

As one of the founders of IPVALUE, responsible with the founding team for establishing the organization, securing the first client (British Telecom) and creating a methodology for commercializing the BT patent portfolio in North America. Performed a variety of tasks including identifying which technologies to commercialize, preparing and executing the commercialization strategy, participating on the Patent Review Board with the client and marketing IPVALUE services to a variety of potential clients.

Responsible for managing the Boston-region IPS organization and providing client services in IP related matters for US and European clients. Services included developing IP strategies, suggesting commercialization partners and negotiation techniques, valuations and portfolio analysis.

Identifying new opportunities, selecting marketable technologies, securing or ensuring proprietary position, developing and executing marketing strategies and tactics, and negotiating licenses and option agreements. Most recent endeavors have been in a variety of industries: medical instruments, flexible packaging, and consumer electronics, flooring manufacturing, aerosol sprays, personal fitness training, internet billing and natural food technologies. Produced a video segment for Direct Marketing of a Consumer Electronics product, negotiated and secured foreign production and domestic fulfillment.

Project Director - Cityscape GTE Telephone Operations Irving, TX (1995)
Project leader for new venture to develop internet-like service for local communities. Developed initial concept and prototype, and demonstrated product viability sufficiently for management to fund and transfer it to an operational group. This new offering was a significant growth and income opportunity, which showed great promise for future expansion of Internet opportunities.
Director - New Ventures GTE Service Corporation Irving, TX (1994-1995)
Identified, analyzed, presented, and managed new venture investment opportunities in telecommunications, which would be of strategic importance to GTE Telephone Operations. Assisted Corporate Merger and Acquisition activities in identifying, analyzing and proposing candidates for acquisition and performed due diligence efforts.
Manager - Business Development GTE Laboratories, Inc. Waltham, MA (1988-1994)
Created profitable technology spin-out/licensing operation for internally focused commercial R&D laboratory. Commercialized various technologies in materials, telecommunications, and fabrication techniques, generating $2M in fees and $8-10M in royalties during my tenure, which continue to generate income for GTE.
