Steven Depp received his Ph.D. in Physics at the University of Illinois in 1972. His first job was with the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory where he worked on high temperature electronics, semiconductor detectors and advanced telemetry systems. As part of the latter effort, he was co-inventor of the high frequency means for radio frequency identification (RFID), for which he received an IR100 award.

In 1977 he joined IBM's San Jose Research Laboratory. His work there centered on advanced display technologies, particularly thin film transistor/liquid crystal displays, and he made the first TFT/LCD in IBM in 1980. After moving to IBM's Yorktown lab, he headed research on Gallium Arsenide; input/output systems, particularly display technologies such as active matrix liquid crystals; packaging, low end storage and organic chemistry. He was IBM Research Liaison for the successful thin film transistor display technology transfer and alliance with Toshiba, as well as several other R&D alliances.

In 1997 he was a Visiting Scientist in the Electrical Engineering/Computer Science Department at the University of Michigan. Upon returning to IBM, he became Co-Director of the Personal Systems Institute which coordinates all research on notebooks, desktops and PC servers in support of IBM's Personal Systems Group, including wireless communications, memory compression and handwriting systems, as well as Linux and Bluetooth and organic LED technologies.

He is a Fellow of the IEEE and has served on various technical boards at the University of Michigan, Rochester Institute of Technology and the University of Colorado. He has about thirty publications and eight patents in the areas of display technology, devices and telemetry.
